Contd. -2- EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}6/F11.11.20. Contd. We must certainly look upon the fact that the present plugs are not satisfactory, and a plug which is capable of running in well lubricated cylinder without failing, and at the same time is satisfactory in other respects, must be obtained and standardised for our car as soon as every possible. This I feel is one of the most important points for us to push. America reported that more satisfactory running can be obtained with the "Champion" plug, also the "Bethlehem" plug, and according to the results obtained on tests whilst I was there, they certainly showed improvement on the present plugs. X.3763. "Champion" plugs are also being used by Mr. Royce on his car (1.EX) which is inclined to overoil. At the time, they appear to be giving much more satisfaction than the present standard lodge plugs. This weakness of the plugs is also the chief cause of poor slow running on magneto ignition. (4) MAGNETOS. X.3702. X.2375. These are not satisfactory, and they are having failures similar to those which we have already reported in our previous complaints of magnetos on cars on test. A new failure took place on a car which came under my attention. The bush for the rocker arm of the make and break now appears to be pinned in position. These pins had come adrift and one of them was actually earthing of the insulated block and causing erratic working of the magneto. This is a further point which I think could be taken up with the makers to advantage. I do not see any reason why these bushes should be pinned. At the same time, if they must be pinned they should be fixed with pins which will not come adrift. | ||
