What are the sources of these liners in England today Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}

For the attention of R.{Sir Henry Royce} Matthews Esq.

Dear Sirs,

We have to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 16th instant, in which you request us to let you have information regarding cylinder liner material which will give the most equitable results under service conditions.

At the present time we have formed the conclusion that a liner of the austenitic iron type, in conjunction with a hardened and tempered ring, gives about the best all-round properties from the point of view of cylinder wear, taking into account corrosion effect.

We have been doing a considerable amount of work on cylinder wear tests, but the report covering these tests is not yet completed. We will therefore take this matter up with you further when we have had an opportunity of considering the report in its finalised form.

With regard to some method of pre-determining the wearing properties of any liner and ring combination, we only wish that we had this means at our disposal. Unfortunately this is not the case, and we have to resort either to extended duration tests in our Research Department, or alternatively carry such tests out on operator's vehicles under our own supervision.

With regard to upper cylinder lubrication, we had one of our Transport vehicles operating with a Simms
