15th August, 1929.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives, Esq.,
Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
Derby.

Dear Mr. Hives,

Some little time back Mr. Evans and myself called to see you in connection with Hypoid gears and central chassis lubrication. Unfortunately, you were away, but we had an interview with one of the assistants in your department.

We came to a complete understanding that Castrol "R" was not entirely satisfactory for Hypoid gears, and undertook to produce a lubricant similar to Whitmore's Compound for a practical test. The works have advised me that two gallons of Wakefield Compound for Hypoid gears have now been sent to you, and a further three gallons went forward yesterday. I shall be very interested indeed to hear the result of the test.

With regard to Central chassis lubrication, I have since been given to understand that the oil sent you was doing very satisfactorily, and would be glad if you would kindly let me know whether we can take it that this lubricant will be standardised by you in the future. It was with this object in view that the sample was made up, and it is hoped that you will be good enough to include the recommendation in your instruction book if it proves quite suitable.
