fingers can easily be depressed on the bench, and they must be so depressed 3 or 4 times before any measurements are taken during the "setting" process.

THE "SETTING" OF THE CLUTCH.

As can be seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the plain nuts on the pivoting eye-bolts have been replaced by castellated nuts, increments of one castellation making a difference of .035" - .040" at the finger-tips. Gauges Ex.25086 for 25/30 h.p. and Ex.25095 for Bentley have been made and are used in conjunction with the rig already mentioned (see Ex.I.66). The fingers should be set as near as possible to the gauge by means of the castellated nuts, and the actual clearance measured for each finger.

The nut governing that finger with the least clearance should then be removed and a cutting tool (Fig.3. Ex.I.85) used to lightly skim the spherical seat, thereby increasing the clearance between the gauge and the finger in question.

The nut having been replaced as before, the gauge which slides off the centre bolt is removed, and the clutch fingers are operated as previously described. The gauge is put back and a fresh measurement can then be taken. These operations are performed until the clearance between the gauge and the finger is the same for each one. A maximum difference of ± .005" is allowed.

Clutches treated as described above have stood up to rough usage on the bench without alteration of setting and we have every reason to suppose that they will be successful in actual use under working conditions.
