We have some valves in the Works at the moment produced in Messrs Hadfields' steel.

I would like the Laboratory to make careful experiments and report as to whether the Hadfield valve has a greater or less expansion coefficient than our S.L.V. steel.

To check this out we suggest that one valve of each type, of precisely similar dimensions, should be carefully raised in temperature and the expansion measured in each case under similar conditions.

Our object in checking this out is to see whether the supposed advantages of Hadfields' steel are due to the fact that the expansion might possibly be less, and therefore the probability of the exhaust valves being lifted and held off their seats by expansion effects cut out.

This matter is an important issue, and we should like to have some information in regard to same as quickly as possible.

BY {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} /SS {S. Smith} will obtain one valve of each type, or, what is the same thing, a piece of metal forged out of each type, to a given length, ground to an accurate over-all length, to enable the test to be carried out.
