X4279 Extract from EFC {E. Fowler Clarke - Electrical Engineer} 8/T6.5.21. RE VISIT TO MESSRS. NORTH (WATFORD MAGNETOS). X.4181. X.4279. The question was put to Messrs. North as to whether they would be prepared to exchange the E.6 magnetos which we have in stock, or those which may be returned from U.S.A. for the E.O.6 or larger armature type. They did not assent to this immediately, but asked for information as to the quantity of magnetos which would be involved. We suggest that Wd. {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} obtains this information and passes it on to them. Larger Armature Magneto. The first machine of larger armature (and increased length of safety gap) type they had running on their test rig during our visit. They have incorporated in this machine a device for damping out the friction of the moveable pole shoes under the magnetic pull, as well as one or two other minor detail improvements. This device merely consists of two springs in place of one for holding the beldalite contact breaker end plate in place on the contact breaker housing. These two springs bear on the plate at opposite points. One spring drops into a slot on the end plate to prevent the plate rotating. The combined pressure of these two springs is enough to cause sufficient friction to prevent any motion of the contact breaker housing, with control lever, due to the pull on the moveable pole shoes. As Messrs. North would shortly be able to supply us with these magnetos in quantities such as we require, it is now doubtful whether it would be expedient to first standardise the E.O.6 type for the Derby built chassis.
