To EH. from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} 28th August 1918. E1/G28818. X.2048 - RE HYDROMETERS FOR WEST WITTERINGHenry Royce's home town Referring to an earlier note asking you to obtain for us hydrometers for measuring the specific gravity of petrol and of accumulator acid, would you kindly note that we have seen some reference in the "Autocar" to a syringe form of hydrometer for use with accumulators. We think that this is no doubt made so that it is possible to inspect a closed-in type of accumulator, with which we are so familiar on car work. It seems otherwise impossible to find out the specific gravity of the acid, without turning the accumulator upside-down and emptying some of the liquid out. No doubt the syringe has a small nozzle which can be pushed through the accumulator vent, together with a glass barrel, in which a small independent hydrometer can be made to float in acid drawn up by means of a piston. I have mentioned this matter to Mr.Royce, and he says "by all means obtain one of the syringe type if possible". Would you kindly do for us what you can in this respect.
