FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} P. 2. CONVERSION MOUNTING. ORIGINAL E2/W24.7.31. X7005. We send herewith LeC. 2931. shewing some modifications to the above, to provide a better fixing for the friction damper, and to introduce more rigidity into the brackets suspending the engine at the front end. The damper attached to the cross tube is now designed with two legs instead of one. The cross member couplings are moved nearer together so as to form anchorages for one of the damper legs. The other leg is anchored to special pin mountings bolted into suitable forgings pinned and brazed to the cross tube itself. Referring now to the stiffening for the mounting this consists of 2 diagonal members bolted to the cross bar and brackets carried from the timing case. We do not wish to scrap the dies which have been sunk for the cross bar and the brackets before mentioned, but we shew the modifications which we think can be carried out by altering the dies, which modifications consist of supplying facings for the bolts securing the diagonal members, and in the case of the cross bar also increasing the width of the section to make this member uniformly stiff with the supporting brackets. Modifications as shewn on LeC. 2931. should be put in hand as soon as possible as it will be necessary to test these new parts out both on the bump rig and on the 10,000 miles test car. The friction damper is shewn with modified washers on LeC. 2928. already sent to Derby. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} | ||
