PROGRAMME OF TEST BED WORK.
Further to memo Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Swdl.{Len H. Swindell}2/AP.24.11.36.

NO.5 TEST BED.

PHANTOM III. No.8.Unit.

(1) Ignition advance tests to be completed.

(2) Check for valve spring surge and bounce through "Rotoscope" both "A" and "B" sides. This unit has valve springs as produced in America (low carbon steel). One side is a copy of our spring and the other side is their version of our spring closely coiled at the base.

PHANTOM III. No.6.Unit.

Following completion of jobs on No.8. unit, it will be returned to shop and No.6. fitted on bed for endurance.

Previous memo gives bearing data.

Additional to 8 Hykro tappets are a further 3 which have been specially hardened.

In conjunction with these tappets the running of which was detailed in previous memo, a new camshaft is fitted.

The Cadillac type fan is to be run during endurance.

Full throttle running, 1st hour at 4000 R.P.M. before starting endurance at Bentley speeds.

BENTLEY B.17 UNIT

Full throttle endurance on Z.3. main bearings.

If O.K., continue to 20 hours when the bottom half should be dropped to inspect the cap half of the bearings. If O.K. rebuild and continue endurance until failure.

BENTLEY B.19 UNIT

Since B.3. crankcase has been found to be cracked, this B.19 will be next engine on test.
