re Castings.

By arrangement with Sft.{Mr Swift} we had a meeting with Mr Raby of the Birmingham Aluminium Castings Co. Mr Walker, and Mr Edwardes being present, as well as BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and Sft.{Mr Swift}

Specimen jacket cores of Phantom III and aero cylinder heads were examined, together with drawings etc.

Our object was to arrive at an idea of Mr Raby's views on what core proportions and wall thicknesses constituted a good production standard.

It was agreed that the pattern maker and core maker normally help themselves to a little extra thickness on jackets and passage ways of cylinder heads, but this is only done on the jacket core, the gas ways and external dimensions being held up to standard. The result of this is that when a jacket core is dimensioned .3 in thickness the final thickness of the sand at this point before casting comes out at about .25.

The following notes were taken as conclusions from the discussion:-

(1) Water jacket walls in aluminium should be dimensioned not less than .175, and Mr Raby thought these would average about .187 in the final casting. .175 is the R.R. dimension for jacket walls.
(2) The main sections of the cylinder jacket cores were not greatly criticized, although it was thought a small addition of bulk might be of some advantage. The fine sections and thin passage ways however were considered impractical, and it was suggested that these should be at least doubled in section. In justice to the desi
