X3701 FILLING PETROL TANKS IN U.S.A.

We have received a memo. from OY. ref:- OY3/G4.3.21. in which he has pointed out that when they use the monel metal gauze for the inlet filter on the tank, it increases consider-ably the time taken to fill the tank at the American Filling Stations, and that they were receiving complaints owing to this.
The trouble is due to the air not being able to pass freely through the wet monel metal gauze. OY. pointed out that they had been able to overcome this trouble by drilling three or four 5/16" holes at the very top of the brass frame which carries the gauze. They considered this should not interfere with the filtering of the petrol because these holes, being right at the top, there is no tendency for the petrol to pass through them. As the petrol level in the tank became higher, the rush of air out of these holes would prevent any petrol entering through the holes.
We have carried out tests which confirm the results obtained at Springfield and agree that the monel metal affects the time taken for the petrol tank to be filled. Below are the results.
The difference cannot be appreciated when the tank is filled from 2-gallon cans. We agree that drilling of the holes at the top of the filter frame is the most practicable
