HYDRAULIC BRAKE OPERATION.

Herewith we send N. sch.s 3585/6.

These are diagrams shewing some further ideas in connection with the hydraulic system of brake operation which R.{Sir Henry Royce} wishes you to investigate with a view to patenting if found desirable.

N.sch.3586 is a general diagram of the system, and the patentable idea which has not previously been given you is that of the overflow pipes from the actuating cylinders to a tank mounted high up, probably on the dashboard. The engine vacuum is applied to this tank by a two way cock, and in this way the surplus oil is returned to the reservoir of the main cylinder.

We think in other respects the idea will be evident from the drawing.

N. sch. 3585 shews in detail the actuating cylinder and automatic adjustment which have been indicated on N. sch. 3586. The difference between this and the automatic adjustment previously sent you is that the adjustment is now subjected to the full braking load. It has the advantage that the piston can be used to shut off the supply of oil from the master cyl. thus avoiding the use of a separate valve. We think the suggestion is fully explained on the drawing, but if there is anything not clear perhaps you will communicate with us.

The patentable features are (1) the whole sch. using the epicyclic adjustment (2) the piston used as its own seal.
