Dear Robotham,

Very many thanks for your letter of the 6th instant.

The question of making flanged bearings in this Country has not been considered, as the washer has, in every case, proved satisfactory. Probably you know that there are several hundreds of thousands of Austin cars with these washers, Standards and Humber-Hillman and the new Bedfords are designed this way.

The new European Fords were going to have washers in preference to flanges.

No doubt you are aware that to make these flanged bearings in the proper way, there would be a very considerable tool charge and on the basis of larger quantity production, it is a proposition.

It is regrettable that you found the loose washer unsatisfactory, but if you will remember the washer you have been using was considerably reduced in area from the one recommended, as you had not sufficient metal in your case to allow for the correct type of washer. We understood that when you modified your designs you would make the necessary alteration, but this appears to have been omitted up to the present.

We have been thinking, for many years, of making flanged bearings as soon as better manufacturing methods
