113/5 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}1/AP. 19th June 1937 The Continental-Diamond Fibre Co., Newark, DELAWARE, U.S.A. For the attention of the Technical Department. Dear Sirs, We are writing to ask for your assistance in connection with the timing gears of our Phantom III. 12 cylinder chassis. The enclosed print, E.87040, shows the arrangement of the gear train, in which the idler gear is of Fabroil A.{Mr Adams}, made by the B.T.H. Co., and all other gears are of case-hardened steel. Our trouble is wear of the Fabroil idler gear, of the order of 0.020" reduction of pitch line tooth thickness during 20,000 miles running. We are sending to you under separate cover a section cut from a gear which has worn 0.022 during 21,000 miles endurance test (max. oil temperature 110°C.) If you are able to form any opinion of the wearing qualities of this material we should be glad if you would let us know your opinion. We wish to try experimentally some gears in your standard Celeron material, preferably without spokes, as we have had some trouble with the existing gear due to failure of the web near the hub. We enclose prints E.86982 and E.87346 giving particulars of the idler gear. If you have any standard blanks which we could adapt to our engine for the purpose of carrying out wear tests will you please send us 4 as soon as possible. We will, of course, cut the teeth. As soon as we hear from you that you can send us the blanks, we will send you an official order for them. Will you please also let us know whether Celeron blanks are made in England. Yours faithfully, | ||
