X.3031 - Re Magnalium.

Regarding the price of magnalium, £215 per ton works out roughly at 2/- per lb., but we do not know how this compares with the crankchamber alloy, both per lb. and per 100 cubic inches. It would be illustrative if you took the specific gravity of bronzes, brass, aluminium crankchamber alloy, and Magnalium, and work them all out per cubic unit, and their strength value. That is to say, that supposing Magnalium casts as well as our crankchamber alloy, the castings would be lighter owing to the difference in thr gravity, and could be thinner owing to the superior strength of Magnalium. So that the price of magnalium might even be cheaper than the present alloy, and for an equal strength might represneta a saving of 10 to 20% in weight.

Owing to the fluctuation of the metal market, it is always best to stnd a comparison of any strange metal with known metals.
