(2) (b) There seems no possibility in this case of backward running in the fully retard position, as the spark would appear to be very much too early.

(2) (m) Likewise the mid-way position would offer little possibility.

We are not quite certain of the advantage to be gained by advancing and retarding the distributor with the contact breaker. Although it should avoid back running as described under (1) (b), it would appear that this could be more easily effected by the use of a long periphery to the revolving arm, or metal segments as long as possible circumferentially in the wipe contact distributor case, with the addition of a trailing brush, if necessary, as suggested in your R18/G50518. At the same time, it would not be expected to overcome the back running described under (1) (a).

On the other hand having advanced the distributor with the contact breaker, we are not certain of the advantage of the long periphery on the trailing arm, as called for by your R6/G12618.
