I.M.Waller, Hotel de France, Chateauroux, Indre, FRANCE. 200a Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Wym.{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}15/JH.5.3.37. 6-B-IV. Replying to your memo. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux}/5/JAB.3rd. March, 1937, we are very surprised to hear that the clip behind the downtake pipe has come off whilst fitting. Considering this clip is made of fairly heavy gauge material and fastened to the box by 4 lofty rivets, it is difficult to conceive how it came off without being maltreated, although we know this clip has given occasional trouble in service. We have been taking down and putting up exhaust systems in the experimental garage for the last four years, at the rate of about 12 per week, and we have never yet had a clip come off. With regard to the modification for the location of this clip the matter was placed in the hands of By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} immediately after receiving Hancock's report, but as we had no design scheme ready for 6-B-IV, it naturally was not incorporated. There is no excuse however for this clip having come off if the box was fitted up correctly. Please let me know whether you are running mileage on this box or otherwise. Incidentally a similar exhaust system is being run on 3-B-IV, and we shall be very interested to know how it behaves. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/G.H.Whyman. | ||
