ORIGINAL

40/50 - RE. 18" STEERING WHEEL. X3465 X1023

Mr. Royce has examined the model to N.Sch. 1349 and would like the following modifications carried out, and the model sent here again for our final approval:-

(1) Diameter reduced to 17 1/2".
(2) Section to be 1.250 wide at bottom of notches, 1.375 wide outside notches, and 1.125 deep.
(3) The notches to be of the type actually used on Goshawk 11. and 6.EX. in which they appear to be outside the actual elliptical section though they may be parts of an ellipse themselves, the general effect is to make them rise up above the section in a more conspicuous way than appears on the wooden model.
(4) Mr. Royce does not like the half notch at the junction with the arms and would like this made into a full notch on this model, and on the Goshawk standard wheel, as soon as possible.

I have shewn these points on my print of N.Sch.1349 and would be much obliged if you would add them to the original and send me another print.

We are not sure how the 17" wheel on 6.EX. has been constructed. Is it an aluminium spider with a heavy coating of xylonite round it, or is it a steel tube with the aluminium spokes riveted in in accordance with the sample which we had here, and which we understood HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} to say stood up well under STATIC test. In any case we should like this steel tubular construction to be adopted as soon as possible, and for the sample 17 1/2" wheels to be made like this.

What is the construction of the Goshawk wheel? now.
