TO BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to - CJ. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL PHANTOM SILENCER. 18230 We send you herewith drawing LeC. 2153., shewing the rear silencer modified to incorporate the 2nd. concentric tube. The fittings at the front end, namely, the drop forged flanges, are unaltered, as also are the pressed sheet metal ends of the silencer. A new flange is required internally at the rear end, and it is proposed for the purpose of saving weight that the cutout casting might be made in aluminium, and provided with gun metal bushes for the cutout spindle. You might think it worth while to try the holes in the diaphragm baffles zig-zagged/one half, and then on the other half alternately of the baffles. Mr. Royce is proposing to send through a suggestion for making the silencer opposite the gearbox as an aluminium casting, with a view to dispensing with the asbestos lagging. The casting should be solid enough not to make a noise, and could be ribbed to take full advantage of air cooling. We are not however working on this at the moment, but will let you know in due course what should be done.
