(2) You will remember that it was our policy with any car to start with everything as light as we dared, and by testing experience strengthening those parts only which were found weak. The reason why the design was such as to demand that both clips were released [handwritten: with withdrawers] at the same time is that it makes a stronger mechanical job, and neater, requiring less weight in the pads, and if the parts are fitted up freely as will be found necessary for rapid production there should be no difficulty about getting apart and no question of driv- ing out the clips except to overcome rust. I was particularly pleased with our arrangement on the Goshawk and think that it only requires some slight modification (and getting used to) for it to be preferred. We are making an arrangement in this modification to prevent the central pin escaping, should the nut fail. The central bolt on the arrangement similar to the 40/50 can never be considered satisfactory as the road shocks have to pass through the whole of the column of plates which causes the central bolt to be strained and liable to fail.
