FILES: x3579. 26.10.33. S.U. CARBURETTER ON 18.G.IV. X1487. We have just run off a series of tests on the dynamometer to determine whether the autovac can supply sufficient petrol for the needs of the single S.U. Carb. The method of testing was to fit a glass sight tube at the side of the autovac, marked off in inches, and to run the engine at full throttle for periods of 10 minutes, noting the fall of the petrol level in the autovac at the end of that time. We found when using a full tank of petrol that the longer we ran the engine the lower the petrol level became, for instance, one reading taken at 3750 R.P.M. shewed a loss of only 1" petrol level, but after five runs at the same R.P.M. it shewed a loss of 2.887" petrol level. This we attribute to the increasing temperature of the petrol in both the autovac and the rear tank, due to the whole of the exhaust system becoming red hot. The following tables are the results obtained and the conditions under which the car was run:- (A) Rear Petrol tank filled to 3" from Top of Filler Pipe for each test. Autovac filled up to normal level for each test. ENGINE R.P.M. PETROL LEVEL LOSS IN AUTOVAC. DURATION OF RUN. 500 1.5" 10 mins. 1000 1.5" " 1500 1.25" " 2000 1.25" " 2500 1.5" " 3000 2.5" " 3500 2.625" " 3750 2.562" " (B) Autovac as above but only 4 galls. of petrol in rear tank - running on main tap. 3750 1.00" 10 mins. | ||
