Re Dummy Goshawk Chassis.
-----------

We did not succeed in finishing the job off as anticipated. We were somewhat hampered by the Coachbuilders who were working on the bodies, but have fixed up all pedals and levers and arranged springs to bring them to their normal position.

We found the footboards were short and not of sufficient length to enable them to be cut to suit scuttle. These should be left about 3" longer.

Shutters....We have fixed up three sets of these, but they are very heavy on the control. They open quite nicely about half the quadrant, and then, when you get the full weight of springs, they are very heavy to operate. I consider it is a question of leverage. The shutter levers come so very near toggling, which gives one the impression that the springs are too strong or the shutters too tight.

There is a complete chassis at Conduit Street which we are also fixing up with shutters, apart from the dummies, which makes five sets to be fitted here; I would recommend that if it could be arranged the shutters for the remaining cars should be fitted when the cars come to Derby. It is not a very nice job to be tackled at the Coachbuilders, or outside.

We loaded the dummy cars last night and it is a big improvement in appearance.

I have just received your wire. Now that you agree to the undershields being fitted it will make a more finished job. Mr. Cowen is very pleased that we are fitting these undershields.
