of various sizes starting with one which will allow 1.53 sq.ins. in its fully withdrawn position and select a piston spring which will allow the restrictor to become fully withdrawn at 2500 r.p.m. Our aim will be to obtain an induction pipe depression not exceeding 2 ins. of mercury at 2500 r.p.m. for the smallest choke area.

The annular spray holes continue to supply fuel when the engine is throttled to idling speeds and result in considerable noise. It is desirable to keep the main emulsion supply in operation at as low a speed as possible as it will be a considerable help in avoiding flat spots and so enable positive accelerations and quick opening up to be obtained also overcome a lot of the cold starting difficulties.

Altogether from these preliminary tests the carb. shews considerable promise.

We shall devote as much time as possible to this carburetter but think it advisable at this stage to give preference to the modified Phantom type carb. with the weir induction pipe as we doubt if the expanding carburetter will be sufficiently developed for use on the first 'SS{S. Smith}' engines.
