BENTLEY CONNECTING RODS.

We have examined the re-conditioned Rods which you returned from Kingsbury, and find that they were fitted up very hurriedly late one afternoon, by the Repair Department, and Mr.Hurst takes full responsibility for the job.

The shells had been bedded to the Rods and Caps because the Rods are out of round in the bore after running, but the bedding was very badly done. We are investigating this feature of distortion and are already making improvements in methods of manufacture. We know that the bores are round when finally ground, but are then apparently in a stressed condition, and after running, these stresses assert themselves and result in the bores becoming distorted.

We intend to cut out the hand bedding of the joint faces of Rod and Cap, and will finish the faces by grinding. The job is being specially watched and we will advise you as soon as the better rods are available, as we shall be interested to have your remarks later.

We are sending this note for your own private information.
