20-HP. Demonstration Cars - Changing of Bendix Pinion to Bijur Type. X3592 3587

In R's memo R6/H16.7.23, he instructs that we should without delay change the present Bendix Gear drives on the 20-HP Demonstration cars to the Bijur Slipper drive type, which is now standard.

This is hardly practicable at present, as the present Bijur design requires a difference crankchamber entirely, and it would mean changing the complete engine unit, which would then mean that we should have old type engines on our hands.

Do you not think at this stage it is most practicable for us to sell these cars and to obtain more up-to-date and DEVON cars for Demonstration work.

I have approached BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} as to whether it would be possible to get out a design of starter motor which could be fitted with the Bijur scheme and which starter motor could be fixed to the existing cars which now have the plain bendix gear fitted. This matter they are now going into, but I am afraid it is not a job which can be done very easily or quickly. I hasten therefore, to give you this information so that you will realise we cannot immediately tackle the job of changing the Bendix gears as instructed by R.{Sir Henry Royce}
