No.2.C. BED

Further to our memo Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}6/KW.1.10.36., with regard to the valve rig to be put on 2.C. bed., we should be glad if you would investigate the possibilities of improving the utility of this rig as under.

In the above memo the work called for was simply a modification to couplings and pedestals, to adapt a Bentley or SpectreCodename for Phantom III crankcase shell, driving direct to the camshaft. We have, however, no means of telling whether results so obtained, on valve gear performance, are consistent with results which will actually exist when the unit is running under its own power, and it is clear that it would be of great assistance in this job if you could arrange the mountings so that any of the following set ups could be arranged in a relatively short time -

(1) Bentley unit - engine running under its own power.
(2) Bentley unit - B.T.H. motor driving camshaft.
(3) SpectreCodename for Phantom III Unit - engine running under its own power.
(4) SpectreCodename for Phantom III Unit - B.T.H. motor driving camshaft.

We should be glad, therefore, if you would look into the matter of making the rig so adaptable that any of the above four units may be mounted without the necessity of calling in the Millwrights to line the job up.
