TO EH. FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} SECRET ORIGINAL R5/1418. 7. 24. Copy to - CJ. HJ. W7. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FH. C. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} E.A.C. 2 & 3. V4586 X9820 re. STEEL ARTILLERY WHEELS ON DUNLOP HUBS. (1) As mentioned in a recent memo. we now have a design that I think will prove satisfactory for fitting the above. It entails alterations to the brake drum, and to the present standard wire wheel hub. (2) The cone is nearer the centre of the car, permitting the actual steel wheel to be almost exactly the usual standard, and yet keep the track almost exactly our wire wheel standard. (Centre point steering will therefore be as desired.) (3) Upon my suggestion Mr. Day has found a good way of shortening the hub by 1", by re-arranging the locking parts, and economising the room so that with the modification in (2) we get correct track, better conditions for carrying the load, same control, and with hubs 2" narrower overall, so that they are level with the splashers, and have a good appearance. The second design for this will be sent to Derby we hope on Saturday. The bolted on type sent recently will therefore not be needed. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
