Hallam - Head Repairs}4/W15.1.24 - we can only suggest that our Instructions for changing the oil in the engine be altered as follows:- 1. If the car has been standing for some time it is advisable for the oil to be drained out of the crankchamber, the filter cleaned out and fresh oil inserted. 2. When the car is new it is advisable that the oil in the crankchamber be drained out and the filter cleaned and the oil renewed after the first 500 miles. 3. This should again be repeated after 1,000 miles running. 4. Should again be repeated after 2,000 miles. 5. The changeover of oil should then be carried out as per the instructions in the book. We have suffered from this oil pressure failure on previous occasions, both on the 40/50 and 20-HP, and think the best means of overcoming the trouble is to arrange definitely some capacity in the oil system which will act as a settling tank. This might be achieved by fixing the sump between the filter and the oil pump. It may be considered advisable to have this sump fixed before entering the oil pump. We have found a settling tank in the system for aero engine and bench test purposes has been efficient in this respect, and if not considered practicable to apply such a scheme to the present cars, it may be considered in future designs. It should be possible, wherever this sump is fixed for it to be occasionally drained out, and instructions to this effect could be added to the Instruction Book. WD{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead} | ||
