Dear Sirs,

GB.4450 - Intermediate Propeller Shaft

The welding of the finished machined taper rear end to the propeller tube has proved unsatisfactory. To ensure that the two pieces are concentric, the machining of the end should be carried out after welding the tube.

In order to correct the first batch of shafts we have had them returned to your Works to have new end pieces fitted. The ends will then be machined at Derby, because we understand that your machinery is not capable of dealing with assemblies of this length.

The alternative to this is for you to sub-contract this machining to some firm in your district. This avoids the necessity for transporting part-finished shafts, and we would prefer to receive them in finished condition.

Will you look into the suggestion, and give us an early reply.

Yours faithfully,

for ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED

Chief Engineer-Chassis
