(2) It will be noted that the improvement that HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/UD. obtained in the 4 cycle engine when supercharged, (by reducing the compression ratio) was chiefly due to the power of the jets to penetrate the reduced density at maximum compression pressure. Some of us associated with the work could not help thinking that this could have been done with rather larger holes in the jets. We must admit that only carefully conducted experiments are capable of indicating the truth. It is manifestly of the utmost importance to keep the Air Ministry interested, with the hope of obtaining their help in money and orders, and it has occurred to me that it might be advisable to send a copy of most (naturally not all) of our correspondence to Mr. Pye, because these ought to convey to him more exactly the serious attention we are giving to this matter. If we do not do so it would appear that the matter was having only very scant attention, and he might be justified in concluding that we were neglecting the work, and transfer his interests elsewhere.
