ORIGINAL. TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} 4. GOSHAWK 11. X4219 X4589 I was not proud of the running of 4.G.11. when I took Mr. Rowledge to the station. I afterwards examined the cause and found the air valve of the new unit was sticking badly just near the bottom. In addition to this the low speed jet appeared to me weak. I re-set this so as to give correct strength, best slow speed running in the central position of the engine, and it was then more pleasing. As you know the half time wheels are not silent. We shall see whether they wear better. I fear that one of the four pairs of teeth are meshing too tightly. Certainly some gears have an unusual amount of backlash, but this is no reason to believe that they are all slack. The noise arising from loose gears do not seem to be cured by the fan drive from the dynamo, but a good deal of the knocking was due to the uneven running of the engine in which case we should not expect any improvement from the fan drive. Attached herewith are some suggestions (R3/M25.6.23.) for some definite instructions which have appealed to me, the answers to which may help us in designing the gearing. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
