x200 To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} c. to EJJ. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/KW.19.8.36. Acme Thread on Bijur Starter Pinion - 25/30 HP. and Bentley. Referring to E.2/HP.17.8.36, where you ask us for a report on the Acme Thread on the Bijur Starter Pinion. We have one of these pinions fitted to 6-B-IV now running in France. Before we issue a standardisation sheet for the pinion, however, we feel it is almost imperative that we should make a number of cold starts. It is quite possible that with the altered thread the tendency to stick with cold oil might be increased. Unfortunately, owing to the fact that we have no cold chamber, our facilities for carrying out these tests are nil. This is unfortunate as the cost saving is about £1,000 per year. We shall have to try and work something in with Lucas's, but they are so crowded out with their own experiments that it is very difficult to fit anything in. We have lots of other jobs waiting for the cold chamber, in particular we are wondering whether we are going to run into piston seizure with a combination of the Stromberg carburetter, the efficient scraper ring, and deleting the oil hole in the connecting rod. We understand that Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} will very shortly start erecting the cold chamber, and hope that it will be treated as a matter of urgency.
