H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} FROM HDY.{William Hardy} ORIGINAL HDY{William Hardy}/L/29.12.32. C. to Mr. WDR. Mr. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} I. Day-RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} BENSPORT - HELICAL SECOND SPEED. 84553 M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} scn. 3630. herewith shews a temporary scheme for a helical 2nd. speed arranged to suit the box as designed for a straight tooth gear, the patterns for which are, we understand, practically completed. We regard this as a temporary scheme because we consider that in the final design the gearbox should be lengthened about .5" in order to give better clearances, longer engaging teeth for 2nd. speed, and the original width of 1st. speed pinion - .700". If Derby consider that an extra .5" can be added to the box without causing serious delay will they kindly let us know. According to our interpretation of the Hoffmann catalogue the roller bearing we shew will carry the same load as the ordinary type with plain bore in the outer race. Would Derby kindly confirm this. We should also like to know what load the bearing on the layshaft will carry at say 2000 RPM. Slight alterations to the pattern are necessary for the larger centre bearing on the layshaft. The outside diameter of the threaded extension on the 1st. speed pinion may be greater than the root diameter of the gear as shewn.
