LEAKS FROM HYDRAULIC SHOCK ABSORBERS.

We have a report from Hancock in which he states that he is getting an oil leak from one of his rear shock absorbers whilst running in France. He is, of course, running in hot weather under the most severe conditions, but nevertheless the leak is of sufficient magnitude to put the shock absorbers completely out of action in 10,000 miles. unless they are re-filled.

The position of the leak is round the joint at the low pressure end and also round the filter plug.

We consider that it will be necessary to pay increased attention to the low pressure joint since now we have shock absorbers that will not knock we are proposing to increase the loading and hence the pressure that goes on this joint.

With regard to the filter plug. As this is not under pressure it ought not to leak. It is rather a large diameter hole, however, and presumably the trouble is due to the facing not being square with the tapped hole.

It would be very helpful to us if, during the present spell of hot weather, the Test Dept. could keep the shock absorbers in their hands under particularly close observation with a view to seeing whether the trouble experienced by Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/CWH. is likely to occur on production shock absorbers.
