1153 To Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}1/MH.{M. Huckerby}14.11.39. GEARBOXES. Now that it has been decided that the most suitable gearbox for Rippletto is our own Myth box, it becomes essential to do an experiment to decide whether the shortened synchro- mesh operation suggested by FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} will function. We think, therefore, the first move is to scheme a synchromesh of this type into a B.V. gearbox so that it can be tried on one of our cars. It will be easiest to fit it into a box of the type previous to the helical reverse. There is such a box in 9.B.V. This experiment, therefore, appears to be the most urgent piece of drawing to be done. We will get the bits made as soon as you send us the necessary details. With regard to reverse operation, Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} again raised the point last night whether we can reduce the selector spring on the 8-cylinder gearbox. Can you therefore please arrange for a sketch to be made showing what difficulties this entails so that we can all decide whether it is worth while going ahead with this modification.
