Dear Mr. Hardy,

I have now had an opportunity of seeing the two Cams you have returned to us and about which you wrote me on the 23rd May, reference as above.

I am afraid I have not been able to gather any very valuable data about them from this examination but trust the few remarks I have to make may be of use.

Firstly, from our records we find that the heat treatment of these Cams was similar to all the others, no deviation having been made on account of the races not being ground.

The depth of case we specify is 1/32" minimum so that it is on the thin side according to your measurement, but I agree with your opinion that it is improbable that this is the cause of the failure.

The core at approximately 75 tons per square inch is up to the standard we have always worked to, and in this connection it must be borne in mind that there is a broaching operation on the bore after heat treatment.
