< 1231 Exptl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}10/KW. 27th June, 1936. Messrs. C.C. Wakefield & Co.Ltd., Wakefield House, 30/32, Cheapside, LONDON, E.C.2. For the attention of Mr. Evans. Dear Sirs, Massey was over here yesterday and surprised us by mentioning the great consideration you were showing to the posterior temperature of anyone forced by necessity or choice to ride in the back seats of a Phantom III chassis. We would therefore hasten to assure you that not even with the temperature mentioned do the ball races expand sufficiently to come into contact with any part of the aforesaid passengers. Furthermore, we should like to add that we have never had complaints of proximity to the exhaust system, which is far hotter than the rear axle. You may remember that the reason we cannot use Hi-Press oil in the gearbox is that the maximum temperature obtainable in this component is of the order of 125°C., and that this unit is within 5" of the anatomy of the driver. We hope therefore you will be able to evolve an extreme pressure lubricant that does not mind these elevated temperatures. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
