the union when tightening up whereas with the coned and some other types the pipe has to be strained when the union is tightened up to allow the nipple to make a seating, and this sometimes results in a bad joint or a broken pipe.

It is not suggested by any means that a complete return to coned unions should be advocated or that such a policy would overcome the difficulties. There is the olive type of joint which has been found to be very good, particularly for small diameters. How far up on pipe diameter this joint can be successfully used we do not know but it might appear that the larger diameters require thicker pipes than we normally use.

The question of an alternative policy is being investigated but in the meantime we should like to have particulars of our present experience,as asked for above.
