20 HP. STEERING.
-------------

Referring to PN{Mr Northey}1/EH. 26.10.26. we do not think that the right way to tackle these particular chassis is as suggested, to fit the .800 worm and nut. We think that for the moment we should try the modified side steering tube which has been arranged with lighter springs, in a manner very similar to that arranged on the 40/50 chassis so successfully in Paris.

We are certain that by far the major portion of the advantages gained in the application of the .800 worm and nut and modified springs in the side steering, is due to the latter, and therefore we are not of the opinion that we should incurr the expense of modifying the nut and worm at this stage.

There is a further point at issue, as well, which points to the above being the correct way of dealing with the matter, namely, that R.{Sir Henry Royce} is of the opinion that the .800 nut and worm does not go nearly far enough. The fact that the nut and worm in themselves do not really make a great improvement was masked by the very big improvement produced by the springs in the side steering. Later experiments, however, have made the matter thoroughly clear, and R.{Sir Henry Royce} is now pushing for a trial of a .720 lead worm and nut capable of being applied to existing 20 HP. steering boxes.

We do not consider that it should be necessary to go to the expense incurred with Mr.Flather on replacing the column as a unit, a procedure which, in my opinion, will be entirely avoided by the .720 worm and nut which are coming on for experimental testing out at the present moment.

We return correspondence herewith.
