THIRTEENTH REPORT OF DESIGN COMMITTEE.

Long Bearing Crankshaft "F" Type.

The experience with the above shaft was discussed and it was agreed to follow this question up closely regarding the proportions of this shaft as being applicable to the "H" and "R" engines, if the evidence is sufficiently conclusive. It was decided that the experimental crankshafts in various materials which are at present on the way shall be machined to this design. When increasing the speed of the Schneider engine, we had in mind the possibility of this type of crankshaft helping us to obtain the necessary reliability.

Schneider Trophy.

Rg.{Mr Rowledge} referred to the meeting with Air-Commodore Chamier and Mr. Mitchell, and stated that in agreeing to 2300 B.H.P. he had in mind increasing the r.p.m. to 3300, with an increase in B.M.E.P. from 236 to 247. From our previous experience, 3300 r.p.m. is a smooth speed for the engine. We formed the opinion that Vickers' are not offering any aerodynamic improvements, and that the increase in speed has all to come from increase in power from the engine.

20 H.P. Exhaust.

Schemes for a slight modification to the cast exhaust branch, and an alteration adding a sliding joint where the exhaust pipe enters the front of the silencer, together with a stay to locate the front end of the pipe, were examined and approved.

Increased Battery Charging Capacity.

Detail schemes for the modification to the switch box and the distribution box etc. to enable us to increase the output of the dynamo when the headlamps are in use, were examined and approved.

Rg.{Mr Rowledge}
