25471 Rg.{Mr Rowledge} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. Mr. Wilkins, A.I.D. EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}13/H22.3.29. re. AIR INTAKE TEMPERATURES ON SUPERCHARGED ENGINES. With reference to A.I.D. memo. of March 21st. W/HB{C. E. Harcombe}/G43. the suggestion of fixing a thermometer in the air intakes, the readings to be taken through a window in the air intake, we suggest is not very practicable, nor can accurate readings be taken. If it is decided there is no alternative but to take temperatures inside the inlets, we suggest that a Cambridge thermometer should be used? This I understand from Mr. Faircloth, who was at Farnborough recently, was carried out there, when testing one of our F.{Mr Friese} engines on the bed, a special type of thermometer being used, made by Messrs. Negretti & Zambra, the thermometer reading from 0 to 30 and the dial of the instrument being about 4" in diameter. If it is decided that we must take the temperature in this position in the air intakes, we suggest that a thermometer of this type should be obtained and tested out in co-operation with the A.I.D. and if satisfactory to all concerned, we should then arrange for this method of testing air intakes as a standard proceeding.
