-Continued- We have never previously had cause to examine the case depth of cams and so do not know the normal depth on the threads. It has occurred to us, however, that as the two cams in question were experimental in that the bearing tracks were not ground after carburising, you may have modified the carburising treatment, so as to maintain the normal depth of case on these end cones with consequent reduction of case on the worm threads. We can, of course, examine the case on some cams produced in the normal way, but owing to pressure of work in our Laboratory, this may take some time. We should be very glad if you could find out whether your works gave these cams the normal carburising time or whether they reduced the time owing to the omission of grinding of the bearing tracks. For your information, we are sending to you the roller and rocking shaft assembly which operated with cam labelled . The damage at the extreme end of this cam is due to the lock stop in the box having been broken and allowing the roller to work over the end of the cam and eventually jump back one thread. This fault is not connected in any way with the surface failures. Will you please return the cams and roller at your convenience. We hope the enemy's activities have not been uncomfortably close to you. Yours sincerely, | ||
