SPRING LOADED CROSS STEERING TUBE.

We understand that at the request of the Test Dept. the D.O. have extended the available range of adjustment on the spring loaded cross steering tube. We consider that this is a very desirable feature and should also be incorporated on the tubes provided for the Repair Dept. to fit to old type axles.

Extended experience with this cross steering tube has indicated that it is preferable to work to the lower limit of the adjustment provided to cater for unlubricated pivots.

A case we have not previously dealt with is that of fitting balloon tyres to cars having old type axles. In these cases only sufficient friction is required to guard against low speed wobbles.

The cross steering tube should therefore be arranged to give a load of 500 lbs. only on the ball ends as a maximum. In cases where the car shews no signs of low speed wobbles when fitted with balloon tyres and the old type of cross steering tube, we consider it may not be necessary to fit the spring loaded tube if the owner is partial to a light steering.
