SILENT 3RD SPEED GEARBOX.

Herewith we send N.Sch.3002 - an investigation of the comparative merits of spur, epicyclic, and internal (spool) gears, principally as regards noise.

The investigation was originally undertaken due to an assertion that the quietness of internal (spool) gears is due to the speed of initial (sliding) engagement of the teeth being very much lower than in spur gears, and is not due to the greater number of teeth in engagement.

We suggest that the merits of the epicyclic gear are brought out, and also in a rather marked degree those of the spool gear.

We have sent a print to R.{Sir Henry Royce} because we believe he will be interested, but for the moment we believe there is nothing Derby need do with the drawing except file it.
