ROLLS-ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. SPRINGFIELD, MASS. +4037 OYS.R.11.23.27 W/NS{Norman Scott} November 23rd, 1927. Mr. E.W. Hives, Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby, England. Dear Mr. Hives: RE: OIL FITTINGS SECTION 5200 I wrote you November 7th about the cleanable disc filter sold under the name "Auto-Clean" in England and "Cuno" in the U. S. and I wrote you at the time that we were going to try the Cuno filter to replace the Purolator in a by-pass of the oil line. Already from the use of this filter on the rig, we believe that it is more effective than the Purolator, which occupies 5 or 6 times as much space. It is particularly important that the Purolator cannot be used with a magneto, whereas a small disc filter in the oil line can very readily be mounted above the magneto on the cylinder block or even on the side of the crankcase below the magneto. As compared with the Zenith, the Cuno filter when used for oil has the advantage of being readily cleaned by rotation of a handle which projects from the top of the filter. Using this filter, we collect probably a teaspoon full of dirt, principally cast iron and aluminum, from every 4 or 5 engines which are run on our gas-rig. May I suggest that you should conduct experiments at Derby in the use of the Auto-Clean filter or the Zenith filter as an oil cleaner as well as a fuel cleaner? Yours very truly, MO/R Maurice Olley [STAMP: POST OFFICE RECEIVED DEC 1927] [STAMP: RECD] | ||
