| To DY. {F R Danby} from E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Copy to C.J. " " HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} " " EF. ORIGINAL X3074 RE 40/50 M.P. CHASSIS VALVE TAPPET LEVER. Referring to the broken model sent with your memo BY12/P29/4/21, Mr. Royce makes the following four suggestions for strengthening this piece :- (1) Leave out the four lightening holes in the side flanges. (It is noted that you have already instructed this.) (2) Perform some of the machining after the carbonising process, so as to leave carbon only where required to be hard. In this way we should get rid of the case hardening on the bottom edges. Mr. Royce thinks the groove through the lever is a cut that can be made after carbonising. (3) Mr. Royce suggests strengthening the section where it is weakest by adding small side flanges in the stamping, as in sketch - [Handwritten text next to sketch] THESE FLANGES RUN INTO THE ROLLER PIN BOSSES & DIE AWAY AT THE ANCHORED END OF LEVER (4) If the relative movement of the cam and lever will allow, Mr. Royce thinks the lever could be increased in depth. Perhaps you could get someone to set out the job to see what can be done with (3) and (4) Items (1), (2), and (4) might be applied to the present unaltered stampings in the Works.
