ORIGINAL SECRET. R2/M2.3.29. REC'D AT WW. 5.3.29. F.{Mr Friese} ) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} ) C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} SS.{S. Smith} VALVE COVER. X7060 I like the cover you now send on LeCs.2677/79, because three holding down studs should be ample, though the end ones might need to be nearer the ends in case of continuous face. If the cork spot faces fill the purpose it will save much money over continuous face, and if continuous joint is necessary it can I think be made better with cork than felt and put in sections - but apparently the whole groove would then have to be end milling, whereas with a turntable the spot milling could be done by ordinary cutter. The double webs near the studs are what I should try first, and I cannot believe it is necessary to go to so much trouble to make this cover satisfactory as originally proposed from Derby. I think the Americans would get there with less cost and complication. If necessary to have leather or better fibre washers then we ought not to need springs. The cover itself and the cork facing should give some elasticity. I suggest magnesium for lightness: very desirable in this piece. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
