Please receive herewith the following design drawing :- E.CD.115 Elevation of Exhaust Manifold, Downtake Pipe and Expansion Box. E.CD.116 Plan and Sections of " " " E.CD.117 Intermediate Pipe - Exhaust System. The manifold is the same as used for Wraith 111. Owing to the small space available in the chassis-frame local to the engine, we are only able to get in a small expansion box, but we have attempted to compensate for this by giving an increased volume in the rear silencer, and a design for this will follow, even so we are still about 10% down as compared with the combined volumes of expansion box and silencers on the standard Bentley '11. Again, owing to restricted space, we are unable to use the Wraith 111 engine breather pipe, and the Bentley 111 breather pipe shown on E.CD.115 is rather complicated regarding the bending of pipe, but we cannot see any way of simplifying it further. The water drain tap for engine has been turned through 180° to give increased room for expansion box, this should also be done for Wraith 111 to keep them alike, see E.CD.68. A number of the details used for the expansion box are as used for Bentley 11. On E.CD.117 it will be seen we have had to cut holes in the chassis cover, and gusset members to clear the intermediate pipe. The hole for pipe in the gusset member is rather low in the member, and we suggest that these holes should be added in the Bentley 111 frame at present being prepared for the bump test to see if the gusset is unduly weakened at this point.
