-4- The last item is very important and has pulled many peoples legs. At the conclusion of serious testing Whyman had got 9.B.V. to the state where it is doubtful whether anyone could tell from inside the car which damper is fitted. The most promising answer to the camwheel problem is the fact that 50% of American cars use an aluminium gear. A sample has arrived from the States. Similar wheel must be drawn for B60 and material analysed. CONN. ROD Little outward signs of progress have been made towards the "Coined to size rod", owing to the pressure of other work on the part of Hardy Spicers. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} and Mr. Daniell understand the position up to the stage of costing and sinking the necessary die. Regarding the necessity or otherwise of drilled up rods (to lubricate the little end bush) it has now been very nearly established that the drilling is not required. Instead the bush is turned around through 180 deg. and is thus "drip fed" through the hole at the extreme tip of the rod. PISTON. The developed piston for 3.500 bore B.60 and B.80. is Aerolite P.482 (Flush top). We have been aware for some time that the Aerolite piston (including the above) is unnecessarily heavy. This is based on the fact that the first 300.3½ litre Bentley's had R.R. split skirt pistons, which were 1 oz. lighter than the equivalent Aerolite, added to which there have been no failures. We have covered this situation, therefore, by "scaling" this piston into the various sizes required for the rationalised range. These are being produced by the Light Production Co. (Slough) up to the grinding stage, on a mixed bag of .64. pistons as follows: RE.784 Split skirt (75 m/m) RE.785 " " (3.25") RE.786 " " (3.50") JRD. has agreed to do the grinding. Continued. | ||
