PHANTOM INDUCTION PIPE HEATING. X8070

Further induction pipe heating tests have been carried out on the Phantom and we are now able to submit a comparison of the rate of warming up of the hot spot with four systems, two being exhaust heated and the remaining two water heated.

These comparisons have been made in the same manner as for the previous tests i.e., using a separate hot spot and recording the temperature of oil in the induction passage, as we found this method gives us consistent results; For arrangement of apparatus see prints with previous report.

The appended curves shew the warming up with the standard exhaust system and butterfly in down pipe as used on F.2.B; series Phantom, the exhaust system with the butterfly valve removed, the water heated system in which the whole of the cyl. jacket water is circulated through the hot spot jacket, and lastly, the simple water heated system in which part of the water only is by-passed through the hot spot jacket.

With the latter two systems we have not yet measured the water flow through the hot spot jacket but are arranging to make this test.

The results shew that our present standard exhaust heated system gives easily the quickest warming up and any of the systems tested and is followed next by the exhaust heating
